Jerzy Buzek: Azerbaijanâ€™s independence and sovereignty are very important for the European Union

Buzek noted that he held effective meetings in Baku. He underlined that the development of the cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Parliament will be very useful for both sides.

Noting that he supports the establishment of Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Jerzy Buzek welcomed this process.
â€œThe establishment of such a structure will pave the way for regional parliamentary cooperation,â€ he said.

Buzek welcomed the achievements of Azerbaijan, but noted the importance of continuing the reforms.
â€œThere is a need to improve freedom of media, freedom of speech, freedom of expression in Azerbaijan. I touched on these issues during all my meetings,â€ he said.

Jerzy Buzek said the European Parliamentâ€™s recent resolution on Azerbaijan was also discussed at the meetings.
â€œWe did not speak only about the issues, on which our positions coincide, but also discussed the issues causing concern of the sides. It is normal to discuss the issues causing concern of the sides. We exchanged views on the issues, which we need to improve,â€ he said.

President of the European Parliament once more congratulated Azerbaijan on the victory in Eurovision song contest.
â€œVictory in this contest is very important. This is a very famous contest,â€ he said.

Jerzy Buzek underlined that Azerbaijanâ€™s independence and sovereignty are very important for the European Union.

Touching on Nagorno Karabakh conflict the guest underlined that the conflicting parties must make efforts for the solution of the problem. Jerzy Buzek said the EU does not participate in the negotiations on the solution of the conflict, added that the European Parliament and the European Union support OSCE Minsk Groupâ€™s efforts towards the solution of the problem. He said EP and EU can help strengthen mutual confidence between the conflicting parties.

Jerzy Buzek said he drew the attention of the Armenian officials to these issues during his visit to Yerevan.
