Baku. Habil Suleymanov – APA. “The organizing urgent discussions on Azerbaijan at the European Parliament and adoption of relevant resolution without any serious reason create deep regret. There is no country today where the state of democracy and human rights is perfect, the European countries also frequently and periodically face with concrete problems”, said head of the foreign relations department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Novruz Mammadov commenting on the European Parliament resolution on Azerbaijan adopted on May 12.

The head of the department said to hold urgent discussions in the restricted-scale format involving limited number of people without substantial investigation and without learning the possible position of official Azerbaijani organizations, is abuse of this procedure against Azerbaijan and aims to damage influence of our country. “On the other hand, such approach doesn’t coincide with unique relationship we currently established with the European Union and damages on the mutual confidence. We can not find logic explanation of this step against Azerbaijan, which is an active participant of the Eastern Partnership and one of the founders of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, the organization uniting the European Parliament and the parliaments of the Eastern Partnership participating countries, and we accept this initiative with some political forces behind it as an obvious example of double standards”.

Mammadov said those political forces, which remain indifferent to the violation of human rights causing casualties every day in different regions of the world, at the same time, to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and fate of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, who lost many of their rights, aim to overshadow sustainable activities of Azerbaijan toward the integration into Europe and to reduce mutual confidence and belief. “The adoption of above-mentioned resolution on the eve of first visit of the President of European Parliament to our country follows the goal to complicate the atmosphere of cooperation and to distract attention in wrong direction. We hope that progressive forces at the European Parliament will show commitment to partnership with Azerbaijan and prevent iteration of such unpleasant cases in the future. Such actions urge us to mention some issues concerning our foreign policy. Azerbaijan is one of the prosperous and rapidly developing countries with great foreign policy achievements in the world. This development covers not only the capital city, but also the regions and villages. These successes are achieved on the back of unity of the President and the nation. Azerbaijan proves that it is a country, which has successful cooperation with the West and carries out magnificent projects. We want to cooperate in this manner – to protect our statehood, realize democratic, legal and secular state-building. I met with the European representatives of the diplomatic corps, they could not find proper answers to my questions about Europe’s biased, unfair position on Azerbaijan regarding several fateful issues – section 907, Nagorno Karabakh, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars, opening of borders etc. I told them if they can prove that they are right, I will put aside hundreds of small issues, say nothing about them. Unfortunately, I saw nothing but strange looks and silence. There is an opinion in the world that the West can apply the international law at its pleasure, since it sees itself as the only and uncompetitive power in the international arena from political and economic aspect. Unfortunately, the representatives of the diplomatic corps express one position in the talks with us, while, as far as we know, send different information to their countries. If the West indeed wants prove its fairness and good will, it should demonstrate concrete position on Nagorno Karabakh conflict in accordance with the international law created by them.

Novruz Mammadov said human rights and democracy are and will be the basic principles of Azerbaijan’s statehood.
“It is useless to politicize them and link to other interests, it will cause inverse reaction in the world. There is no restriction on the activity of political parties, media, NGOs, internet etc. in Azerbaijan. But if these forces are so fair in the issues on human rights and democracy, let them adopt at least one resolution on the fate of one million refugees and internally displaced persons. What does it mean to remain an observer of the process lasting for 20 years? I think the principles of bilateral cooperation should be clear, determined. In this case the cooperation will be mutually effective and successful,” he said.
