Russian ambassador-at-large: “We need to reach concrete result until the summit of the leaders of the Caspian littoral states”

Baku. Habil Suleymanov – APA. On Wednesday, the five-party working group on development of the Convention on Caspian legal status issued a communiqué on the results of their meeting in Baku. According to APA, the document says that some clauses of the draft convention have been coordinated.

At a press conference held following the two-day meeting, Special Representative of the Iranian President on Caspian issues Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh said the sides showed political will and made efforts to reach common agreement.

Ambassador-at-large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Golovin called the negotiations a multipartite process. “We are trying to reach agreement on securing the national water areas, fishing, economic cooperation and other issues”. He said they needed to reach concrete result until the next summit of the presidents.

Turkmenistan’s representative Murad Atajanov also emphasized that a serious progress was made at the meeting. He said they could come to common conclusion about some previously uncoordinated issues.

Kazakhstan’s representative Kayrat Saribay stated that the sides are very close to common agreement. The Kazakh delegation proposed to consider the possibility of joint moratorium on sturgeon fishing on the Caspian Sea.

The five-party working group on the development of Draft Convention on Caspian Legal Status will hold its next meeting in Moscow. The meeting will be scheduled via the diplomatic channels. The summit of the leaders of the Caspian littoral states will also be held in Moscow. The summit is expected to take place by the end of the year.
