EU assists in South Caucasus’s united border management

Tbilisi. Nizami Mammadzadeh - APA. Today presentation conference of program on “Complex management of borders” was held by the participation of representatives of the Georgian, Armenian governments, international organizations and the EU member-countries in Tbilisi. Program’s budget hits 6.3 million euros. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the International Centre for Migration Policy (ICMPD) will implement this program. The EU’s new program will assist the governments of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in the implementation of border management system, which will make them both open and safe.

Deputy head of the UN Development Program mission in Georgia Inita Paulovich, director of projects, representative of the EU mission in Georgia Martin Klauke, director of the International Centre for Migration Policy Martin Pluim, chief of Georgian Patrol Force Office George Gabashvili, Deputy head of Customs Control Samson Urudiya, chief of National Security Council Babken Voskanyan, program manager Jean-Charles De Cord and other officials delivered speeches at the conference.

Director of projects department, representative of the EU mission to Georgia Martin Klauke said that their purpose was to apply the mechanism in the South Caucasus and contribute to the joint work both with EU countries and inside the region. Klauke said to journalists that some components are expected within the framework of the program: “First, is giving technical aid, better organization of border service, giving important advices in this direction and realization of testing projects”. Klauk noted that there is still conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia and that is why there isn’t any cooperation because of the closed borders between the two countries. To him, cooperation on borders may only be on the level of information exchange.
