The US government has imposed sanctions on Ali Ansari, a UAE-based financier who it claims is a financier of the Iranian elite, APA reports, citing the US Treasury Department.
According to the report, the US Treasury Department announced that Washington's current sanctions also apply to three shadow currency exchange firms in Iran, a firm based in Hong Kong, and another company based in the UAE.
According to the US, all entities and individuals blacklisted are engaged in illegal financial activities by the Iranian government and evasion of US sanctions.
Ansari allegedly acted in the interests of Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, among other things.
Washington also claims that the currency exchange firms in question conducted billions of dollars worth of transactions annually through a number of companies on behalf of sanctioned Iranian banks.
