New York – APA. The UN Security Council, under Austria’s presidency, held an open debate and unanimously voted for resolution on protection of civilians during armed conflicts, APA reports quoting Azertac news agency. Azerbaijan, as the most UN member countries, joined the resolution as a co-author. 15 members of the Security Council and nearly 45 other UN member countries participated in the debates. Armenian representative tried to justify aggressive and expansionist policy of his country and repeated Armenia’s notorious groundless arguments.
Azerbaijan’s permanent representative to UN, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev said in his speech that Azerbaijan showed special interest to the issue and protection of civilians during the armed conflicts and fulfillment of international law commitments by the parties of conflict was a significant issue for the region. He said a number of Azerbaijani citizens suffered from the problems of refugees and displaced persons as a result of occupation of a part of Azerbaijani territory by Armenia. The ambassador particularly emphasized the fact of genocide committed by Armenia in Khojaly town of Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in the context of issue discussed at the Security Council and said international socially dangerous crimes were committed against the civilians in that conflict. Then it was noted that despite protection of civilians during the armed conflicts has been on UN Security Council agenda for 10 years, some countries, including Armenia, continue to do violence to international humanitarian.
