Secretary General of the Council of Europe meets with permanent representatives of GUAM member states

The Permanent Representation of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe said the proposal for a meeting with the secretary-general was raised at the last meeting of GUAM member states permanent representatives.

The parties discussed the challenges during the new Secretary General s term in office, the reforms aimed at strengthening the political role and international credibility of the Council of Europe, the conflicts in the GUAM area, the Protocol No. 14 for the improvement of the European Court of Human Rights etc.

The Secretary General noted that there was progress in Russia on the ratification of the protocol and underlined the importance of doing more in this direction in the future.

In addition, the Secretary General said that major structural changes will be made in the Secretariat of the Council of Europe..

During the meeting, the Azerbaijani side emphasized the need to intensify the Council of Europe s efforts in the settlement of "frozen conflicts in the GUAM area.

The meeting was praised as useful in terms of familiarization of the Secretary General with the developments in the region, and Azerbaijan.
