How Azerbaijani political analysts assess signing of Turkey-Armenia protocols? - POLL
“Soon after the protocols were signed, Sargsyan was called to Moscow. All the details of the protocols will be discussed there, Russia will play its game. Turkey can not cope with Armenia and Russia together and the process may go the other way. Russia and Armenia were anti-Turkish states throughout the history. That’s why Turkey’s concession to Armenia was Turkey’s abasement,†he said.
According to Vafa Guluzadeh, Turkey hopes for admission to the European Union, therefore signed agreement ignoring Azerbaijan’s interests.
“After the protocols were signed, Nalbandian shook hands with everybody, but did not come up to Davutoglu. Nalbandian was late for the ceremony for an hour. Davutoglu came in time, he did not leave the room fearing he could be accused of attempting to break the agreement. I am not satisfied with Turkey’s behavior of self-abasement. Turkey plays alone, Russia, Armenia and America together in this game. Turkey will lose the game,†he said.
Guluzadeh said the signing of the protocols protracts the settlement of Karabakh conflict.
Political analyst Zardusht Alizadeh makes a positive assessment of the protocols. He considers that if the superiority of the ruling parties of the two countries is taken into consideration and the presidents demonstrate will, the protocols will be confirmed in the parliament.
“This is a step serving the normalization of the relations between the two countries. Erdogan is a self-respecting politician and after the protocol was signed said that the borders will not reopen unless there is serious improvement in Karabakh problem. This agreement is profitable for Armenia and Turkey. Turkey will eliminate one of the groundless claims against it in Europe. Nagorno Karabakh is the problem of Azerbaijan,†he said.
Alizadeh considers that if Turkey, not Russia takes the main place in Armenia’s foreign policy, it is also very important for Azerbaijan.
Co-founder of Republican Alternative Civil Union, political analyst Ilgar Mammadov considers that it serves the long-term historical interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey.
“Armenia did not use to compromise in the Karabakh talks, because Russia impeded it. Due to the normalization of Turkey-Armenia relations, Turkey will form an influential point of interest in Armenia, Armenia will make a decision independently, not at Russia’s dictation, when there is a chance of improvement in Karabakh talks. The signing of these documents is a great success of Turkish diplomacy,†he said.
Mammadov said participation of US, Russian and French foreign ministers in the signing ceremony allows to say that Turkey-Armenia rapprochement is informally connected with the improvement in Nagorno Karabakh problem.
“Sometimes Azerbaijan and Turkey should demonstrate different positions to achieve common goals,†he said.
Rasim Musabayov told APA that the documents will not be easily ratified in the parliament.
“I think Armenian parliament will intend to amend the protocols, or its ratification will be followed by such a statement that it will be inadmissible for Turkey. That’s why the ratification of the protocol may take much time. A number of issues are questionable,†he said.
Musabayov said Turkish leadership promised several times that the borders will not reopen, unless there is improvement in the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
“If they do not keep their promise, the sides will lose confidence in each to her and I do not think that it will favor Turkey and Azerbaijan. Turkish officials having high experience have certainly taken this into consideration,†he said.
