Azerbaijani MPs ask Erdogan to release professor arrested over Ergenekon case

Turkish news site nethaber.com said the MPs presented the letter to Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his last visit to Baku.
â€œâ€¦ We are asking you to do your best for the release of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberalâ€¦,â€ the website quoted the letter as saying. The site didnâ€™t identify which MPs wrote the letter.
Vesti.az reported that the letter writers are Panah Huseyn, Arzu Samadbayli, Rafig Mammadhasanov, Ikram Israfil and Nasib Nasibli.
Panah Huseyn admitted that they wrote a letter to Turkish president and prime minister, calling for the release of Dr. Mehmet Haberal. He said the initiative of writing a letter was put forward by MP Arzu Samadbayli.
Arzu Samadbayli told Vesti.az that they sent a request to the Turkish authorities, taking into account the merits of Dr. Mehmet Haberal for Azerbaijan.
â€œIn terms of his merits, Dr. Mehmet Haberal is a figure who plays an important role in the development of education. MP Rafig Mammadhasov, professor at Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU), knows him personally. Dr. Mehmet Haberal has helped provide AMU with staff and medical equipment. We hope that the Turkish authorities will take our request into consideration,â€ he added.
