Besiktas advanced to the league phase of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday despite losing 1-0 away to Lithuania's Kauno Zalgiris in the second leg of their playoff tie, progressing 3-1 on aggregate after a commanding 3-0 win in the first leg in Istanbul, APA reports citing Türkiye Today.

Besiktas started the match aggressively, testing Kauno Zalgiris goalkeeper Deividas Mikelionis within the first two minutes when Salih Ozcan struck a shot from outside the penalty area that Mikelionis saved. Dusan Vlahovic followed with a blocked effort in the 11th minute, while the hosts responded through Gabriel Debeljuh and Ivan Fiolic, though without troubling the scoreline.

The Turkish side controlled the game territorially in the opening half, holding 73 percent of possession, but Kauno Zalgiris held firm defensively and did not allow a shot on target before the break, leaving the first half goalless.

Kauno Zalgiris breaks through late

Besiktas kept pressing after the restart. Vaclav Cerny fired wide from an Ilhan Fakili cross in the 52nd minute, and Mikelionis denied Vlahovic from close range a minute later after a pass from Kassoum Ouattara.

The hosts then found the breakthrough against the run of play in the 64th minute, their first shot on target of the match. Renan Oliveira intercepted a backpass from Besiktas centre-back Tiago Djalo and beat goalkeeper Alexander Nubel in a one-on-one situation to give Kauno Zalgiris the lead.

Besiktas right-back Aamir Murillo nearly leveled the score five minutes later, but Mikelionis pushed his effort away for a corner. Kauno Zalgiris held on to their advantage for the rest of the match, though it was not enough to overturn the three-goal deficit from the first leg.
