Argentina's national football team displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Malvinas are Argentine") on the pitch after defeating England in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, APA reports.
The Malvinas refer to the Falkland Islands, which are under British control. Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the archipelago.
It should be noted that Argentina and the United Kingdom fought a war over the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands in 1982. Following the conflict, the islands remained under London's control.
Earlier, the Argentine government had announced that the use of political slogans and symbols that could incite violence would be prohibited for fans during the semifinal match.
