"We highly appreciate Azerbaijan's support," Pakistan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Qasim Mohiuddin, said while speaking at the "Youm-e-Istehsal" (Day of Exploitation) event held to express solidarity with the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, APA reports.
In his speech, the ambassador particularly emphasized Azerbaijan's consistent support for Pakistan's position on the Kashmir issue and expressed gratitude to official Baku for this support.
"On behalf of the Government of Pakistan, as well as personally, I—like every Pakistani—highly appreciate the principled position and unwavering support of fraternal Azerbaijan regarding bilateral relations, the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and all other international platforms. We express our deep gratitude to Azerbaijan for this principled support calling for an end to India's illegal occupation," the ambassador stressed.
Qasim Mohiuddin stated that on August 5, 2019, India revoked the constitutional provisions granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. According to him, these unilateral steps were primarily aimed at a domestic audience and were intended to alter the demographic composition of the region.
The ambassador said that, as a result of these changes, people from outside the region were allowed to purchase property there, with the aim of turning the Muslim population into a minority in their own homeland. He added that these steps do not change Kashmir's status under international law.
According to the diplomat, human rights violations continue in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He said that journalists are not allowed to report freely on developments in the region, internet restrictions have become routine, and the territory resembles one of the world's largest "open-air prisons."
Qasim Mohiuddin noted that lasting peace and stability in South Asia depend on the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people.
The ambassador said that Pakistan would continue to provide diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir. He also called on media representatives to view the Kashmir issue not only as a political dispute but also as a humanitarian problem.
"People's lives are at risk here, their identity is under threat. Children are not safe, business activities are not safe. This is, first and foremost, a humanitarian issue," the ambassador added.
