An armed man was detained near US President Donald Trump's golf club in California after allegedly conducting surveillance of the property ahead of the president's visit, authorities said.
According to police, the incident occurred on August 2, two days before Trump arrived in the state.
Plainclothes federal agents identified the suspect, 38-year-old Janin John Tele, walking around the golf course while taking photographs and videos and observing security preparations. He was subsequently taken into custody.
Investigators said they found a loaded magazine on the suspect, while a search of his vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun and ammunition. A subsequent search of his home reportedly led to the discovery of additional firearms, a ballistic vest, and notebooks containing what authorities described as concerning writings.
Officials also said the suspect was already under investigation in connection with a robbery case at the time of his arrest.
Trump visited California and arrived at the golf club two days after the suspect was detained.
