The COP29 Sustainability Report was published today, APA-Economics reports.
The report highlights the serious measures taken to make COP29 one of the most sustainable global climate conferences ever organized. During the Azerbaijan COP29 Presidency, sustainability principles were integrated into all stages, from planning to implementation and legacy, and new standards were set for future hosts.
It was noted that the main line of this initiative is the seven sustainability commitments of COP29:
1. Achieving net zero - The event was powered by 100% renewable energy and unavoidable emissions were offset. Thus, the COP29 event became the first climate conference in Azerbaijan to achieve net zero.
2. Sustainable mobility - Thanks to 160 electric vehicles, a low-emission transport system was implemented and comfortable and environmentally friendly mobility was created for more than 70,000 delegates.
3. Waste management – A zero landfill policy has been implemented and waste sorting, recycling and large-scale composting have been implemented.
4. Green procurement – Eco-certification requirements for all strategic suppliers and 95% of food products have been sourced locally, reducing emissions from transportation.
5. Inclusive and accessible COP – Comprehensive functional accessibility, including sign language services and barrier-free infrastructure, has been provided.
6. Local capacity building – Over 3,000 volunteers, staff and government representatives have been trained in sustainability, creating a long-term legacy of skills.
7. Transparency and legacy – The COP29 Sustainability Report has been published, documenting all achievements and providing a roadmap for future chair countries.
COP29 also achieved ISO 20121:2024 certification for sustainable event management, proving that even an event of this scale can be organized in full accordance with international best practices.
“Our mission for COP29 was clear: to turn sustainability from slogan to action,” said Narmin Jarchalova, CEO of COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company. “From powering the event venues with renewable energy to preventing waste from going to landfill and creating an exemplary roadmap for future hosts, we have proven that global climate conferences can deliver on their promises. This legacy belongs not only to Azerbaijan, but to the entire international climate community.”
By integrating innovation, inclusiveness and operational excellence, COP29 succeeded in managing a global event in a sustainable manner and has stimulated stronger climate action around the world.
The COP29 Sustainability Report, which contains documented achievements and an overview of lessons learned, has been published on the official COP29 website.
