APA-Economics presents an interview with Fergus Auld, the British Ambassador to Azerbaijan:

– Mr. Ambassador, this year’s 3rd National Urban Forum of Azerbaijan focuses on “Climate Resilient and Healthy Cities.” What are your expectations?

– I think the theme for this year’s forum has been very well chosen. “Climate Resilient and Healthy Cities” is a highly relevant topic both globally and regionally. We’ve already heard from Marcelina Zelinska of the British company Chapman Taylor, who spoke about how they are helping to preserve Shusha’s cultural heritage while at the same time transforming it into a smart and livable city through an integrated approach. This perfectly aligns with the interests of both the UK Government and British companies.

– The key focus of Azerbaijan’s economic agenda now is diversification and the development of the non-oil sector. In which areas do you see potential for increased British investment?

– Our main goal is to listen, understand, and help Azerbaijan to “build back better.” Traditionally, the energy sector has been at the forefront of relations between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan. However, we now see strong potential in new areas such as clean energy, infrastructure, security, healthcare, and education. We are very keen to support the development of Azerbaijan’s non-oil economy.

– The peace process and regional economic integration are also in the spotlight of international investors. How do you assess Azerbaijan’s prospects in this context?

– The initialing of the peace agreement in Washington a few months ago sent a very strong signal to the international investment community — it showed that positive changes are taking place in the region. The official signing of that agreement would further strengthen international confidence.
There is already significant interest in “connectivity” across the region. The construction of road and railway projects through Horadiz and Eastern Zangezur towards Nakhchivan is very impressive in this regard. These projects create the essential infrastructure for peace and prosperity.

– How would you assess the activity of British companies in the liberated territories?

– British companies are already actively operating here. BP is implementing a solar energy project in Jabrayil. Chapman Taylor has participated in the master planning of several cities. A number of British companies have also been involved in landmine clearance operations. Furthermore, Zaha Hadid Architects, the firm that designed the Heydar Aliyev Center, is now exploring new opportunities in the region. All of this demonstrates the United Kingdom’s genuine intention to be a real partner in Azerbaijan’s reconstruction and development process.

– What steps should be taken for the Zangezur Corridor and other transport routes to become operational?

– I believe some discussions still need to take place. Moving from the initialling to the signing stage of the peace agreement will be very important for building international confidence. Forums like this one are valuable because they allow international representatives and companies to witness the real progress happening in the region. The establishment of world-class infrastructure across Karabakh is already clearly visible.

– We know you’re a football fan, and “Qarabağ” FK will soon play two matches against British clubs in the Champions League. What are your expectations?

– To be honest, I love football. Qarabağ look very strong this season. Their 3–2 win over Benfica and the match against Copenhagen showed that this team can compete at the European level.
When Chelsea come to Baku, it will be a very exciting match. As the British Ambassador to Azerbaijan, my heart will be split in two — for both Chelsea and Qarabağ (laughs).
