Baku-APA. The Turkish army scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to the southern Turkey on Wednesday after a Syrian aircraft was spotted approaching the Turkish border, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
A Syrian MIG-23 aircraft was seen nearing the Hatay Province of the Turkish border and the F-16s were sent to intercept the warplane, said the army in a statement released by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.
The Syrian aircraft turned back after approaching as close as 4. 2 miles from the Turkish border, added the statement.
A number of similar incidents have come under the spotlight since Turkish jets shot down a Syrian helicopter last month near Hatay after the Syrian chopper violated Turkish airspace.
