Baku-APA. Activists from anti-austerity groups have taken to the streets of London to protest against the rising energy prices caused by "profit-hungry" power companies, APA reports quoting Press TV.
On Tuesday, demonstrators gathered in the heart of London’s financial district to protest against the Big Six energy companies.
The Big Six energy companies announced a fivefold rise in profits over the past four years.
New figures revealed that over 30,000 winter deaths were recorded in 2012, a statistic that is sure to increase as higher energy tariffs take effect.
The demonstrators were carrying a coffin full of energy bills to symbolize those who died last winter because of cold weather and lack of fuel.
Anti-austerity groups included Fuel Poverty Action, UK Uncut, Disabled People Against Cuts, and the Greater London Pensioners Association.
Andy Greene from Disabled People Against Cuts described the pains and sorrows of a number of his group’s members.
“People who are feeding their kids instead of feeding themselves, people who are turning the heating off during the day, people who are wrapping up in layers of clothing to go to bed and people who are dying because they are so isolated in their own homes,” he said.
"People are protesting to demand the alternatives to the big six's killer cartel - a combination of publicly owned and community-controlled renewable energy, alongside mass insulation, would bring down the bills,” said Clare Welton of Fuel Poverty Action.
