Baku-APA. A hostage incident in Reuver, a town in the southern Dutch province Limburg, ended Thursday with the hostage-taker killing his three-year-old daughter and himself, said Dutch police, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Around 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) a man was involved in a fight with his ex-wife, who had recently finished their relationship. After he shot her in her leg the shooter escaped to another house, the house of his ex-parents-in-law, with his three-year-old daughter as hostage.

His ex-wife was brought to the hospital. After negotiations with the man a SWAT team entered the house at around 2:45 p.m. and found the dead bodies.

Gery Veldhuis, chief of the Limburg police, outlined the events during a press conference in Reuver.

"The negotiators at first had good contact with the alleged perpetrator," he said. "He said he was frustrated of not seeing his daughter too often. He had no demands, but explained he was armed and that he had taken his daughter as hostage."

"After a while his tone softened," Veldhuis added. "He said he was doing something stupid and only wanted to hug his daughter for half an hour and after that, at 12.30 p.m. he would come outside."

"At some point, however, we received no further contact with him. We decided to enter and on the first floor of the house we saw the dead bodies of the alleged offender and his daughter," said the police chief.

Public prosecutor Peter Muijen added that the alleged offender was a man from Roermond, born in 1969, who had several convictions behind his name, with the latest dating from 2005. Since September this year the family had been in contact with several institutions, specialized in youth care and domestic violence.
