It will be better for our democracy if the ruling party Georgian Dream does not have its own candidate in presidential elections, said Georgia’s Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze at a briefing held at the Government’s Administration on Thursday, APA reported citing Interpressnews.
“We have a number of candidates who can get decent results, but it will be better for our democracy if Georgian Dream does not have its own presidential candidate in the upcoming elections,” said the Georgian premier.
“Of course, the task of any political force is to take part in any elections, to invest the maximum resources to get a good result. I assure you that we have a number of candidates, Bidzina Ivanishvili also talked about it, who can easily get a decent result without challenges in the presidential election - on the one hand but on the other hand, the Georgian Dream's philosophy is that we should create a true European Parliamentarian democracy and a parliamentary republic in Georgia. Therefore, there is another very important argument apart from the pure party interest: now, when we have a constitutional majority in the parliament, it will better for our democracy that the Georgian Dream does not have its own candidate for presidential elections. Both of these arguments have a very serious weight. I would like to tell you that there are very contentious discussions and as the chairman of the party said, we will inform society about our final decision in the nearest future,” he added.
The presidential election in Georgia is scheduled for October of this year.
