Baku-APA. The European Union on Monday kicked off the "Mobility Week," an annual campaign on sustainable urban mobility for over a decade, in a bid to encourage greener daily transport habits and fight against urban air pollution, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
More than 2,000 European cities and towns participated in the campaign with such initiatives as "free-car day" to raise the awareness about the impact of transport on air quality. Local authorities were also encouraged to further develop greener transport measures.
"This year we focus on the impact of our daily choices on air and our health... By raising awareness and offering greener alternatives, cities can become more attractive places for people to live," the EU's environment commissioner Janez Potocnik said here on Monday.
"It reminds us that we all have a part to play in fighting urban air pollution," the EU's transport and mobility commissioner added.
Urban traffic is a growing source of air pollution in Europe, in particular in terms of particular matter and nitrogen dioxide. EU policymakers have been reviewing its air policy and plan to launch a new strategy later this year.
