"Azerbaijan has proven to be a reliable and trustworthy energy partner for the European Union," President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen made the statement during a press briefing with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, APA's correspondent reports.
"Energy cooperation remains one of the strongest pillars of our partnership. Over the past years, Azerbaijan has proven to be a reliable and trustworthy energy partner for the European Union. We have not forgotten that when Russia used energy as a weapon and cut off gas supplies to Europe, Azerbaijan stepped in to help. The Southern Gas Corridor has truly strengthened Europe's energy security, and this is a great success story. For that, I would like to thank you.
Now we are preparing for the next stage. Azerbaijan is investing in the energy of the future. This includes your plans to develop offshore wind energy in the Caspian Sea. You have both great ambitions and great potential to become a regional hub for clean electricity. This is fully aligned with Europe's green transition strategy.
That is why we see tremendous potential to further deepen our cooperation in renewable energy, electricity interconnections, and regional energy networks. We welcome the plans to establish a green energy corridor connecting Azerbaijan with the European Union. Increasing renewable energy production can free up more gas for export, which can then be shared with neighboring countries, further strengthening regional energy security," the President of the European Commission said.
