President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes to meet his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, the Turkish leader made this statement while returning from Azerbaijan, during his remarks to journalists, APA's Türkiye correspondent reports.
He stated that this meeting is important for the normalization of Türkiye-Syria relations: "I am still hopeful regarding Bashar al-Assad. I still believe that we will come together and restore Türkiye-Syria relations. We need to dismantle the terrorist structures between Syria and Türkiye."
Erdogan also added that there is a basis for a just and lasting peace in Syria.
"The steps to achieve this are clear. We have extended a hand to the Syrian side for normalization. We believe that this normalization will open the door to peace and stability in Syrian territories. We are not the ones threatening Syria's territorial integrity. Syria's territorial integrity is threatened by terrorists, especially the PKK/PYD/YPG terrorist organizations. Syria’s territorial integrity is not threatened by Syrians scattered across most countries. Assad must realize this and take steps to create and protect a new atmosphere in his country. The threat from Israel around them is not a fairytale. We must not forget that the fire in the region can spread quickly to unstable areas," he stressed.
According to Erdogan, the results of the discussions held both in Baku within the framework of COP29 and at the informal summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League in Riyadh are of great importance for the future steps to be taken in Syria.
