Russia gets expelled from Executive Council of Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

Russia has been expelled from the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), OPCW wrote on X, APA reports.

It was noted that 21 OPCW Member States were elected to join the Executive Council in 2024: Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa from Africa, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan from Asia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine from Eastern Europe, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala from GRULAC and Belgium, Denmark, Greece, New Zealand, Spain from WEOG.

In the voting, 98 countries voted in favor of the changes in the Council, 8 countries voted against, and 21 countries abstained.

Note that the OPCW Executive Council consists of 41 OPCW Member States that are elected by the Conference of the States Parties and rotate every two years.

The Council supervises the activities of the Technical Secretariat and is responsible for promoting the effective implementation of and compliance with the Convention.
