The Muslims released from captivity at a mosque in Mariupol are Azerbaijani citizens, said "realnoevremya.ru” online publication, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.

Note that during an attack on the liberation of Mariupol, a special operation was carried out to release hostages held by Ukrainian servicemen at a Turkish mosque in the Primorsky district on April 16 at the request of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said Igor Konashenkov, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General at a briefing on April 17.

According to him, as a result of the operation, the mosque was besieged and 29 militants, including foreign mercenaries, were killed.

The hostages, citizens of one of the CIS countries, were released and taken to safety.

The released hostages were Azerbaijani citizens, said Realnoevremy.ru online publication.

 Reported that according to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Mariupol Mosque is also a center of Islamic culture of the same name.

The mosque, inaugurated in honor of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Roksolana, was inaugurated on October 15, 2007.

The opening ceremony was attended by Turkish Minister of Construction, Architecture, Housing and Communal Services Faruk Nafiz Ozak and his three deputies, including senior officials.

Director of the Mariupol Central Market Salih Cihan and members of the Azerbaijani community of the city invested in the construction of the mosque.
