Hungarian government spokesperson Gergely Gulyash stated on Monday that Hungary would oppose any European Union embargo on Russian oil and gas imports, APA reports citing Teletrader.
"We have made it clear that we will never support the extension of EU sanctions against Russia to the energy sector," Gulyash said. He also stressed that the block had not yet approved any sanctions that would make it impossible to pay for Russian gas in rubles and that this is regulated by a civil law agreement between states and companies.
Restrictive measures require unanimity of the EU countries. Since there is no such unanimity, the European Commission will not be able to impose an embargo on Russian energy resources, Gulyash reminded.
