Supreme Court of Georgia finished the trial process of the case of Mikheil Saakashvili, APA’s local bureau reports.
According to the Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s office, the decision on the former president’s sentenced by the Tbilisi Court of Appeals on November 22, 2018, for six years in prison on charges of violence, abuse of power, and intentional infliction of serious injury to a group of individuals has been approved.
The court found former president had committed a crime against Valery Gelashvili, a former member of the Georgian parliament.
It is noted that after talking about Saakashvili's personal life in an abusive manner in the article published in the "Resonance" newspaper by Valeri Gelashvili, Saakashvili asked former Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili to punish Valeri Gelashvili, but Irakli Okruashvili refused.
Then, Mikheil Saakashvili further instructed Ivane Merabishvili, Minister of Interior of Georgia, to physically deal with Valeri Gelashvili. After being commissioned, Ivane Merabishvili ensured the fulfillment of Mikheil Saakashvili’s instruction on July 15, 2005.
Precisely, Valeri Gelashvili was driving his vehicle in the vicinity of Mirtskhulava Street in Tbilisi, when the operative officers of the Special Operative Department together with the armed Special Task Force officers blocked Valeri Gelashvili’s vehicle and attacked the latter and those with him. As a result, former MP Valeri Gelashvili suffered life-threatening injuries.
