French industrial output up 0.3% in July, undershooting forecasts

French industrial output edged 0.3% higher in July, confounding the expectations of some economists who forecast a summer heatwave might support a stronger rebound, official data showed on Tuesday, APA reports citing Reuters.

The weaker-than-expected French data follows an unexpected fall in German industrial output in July that added to signs struggling manufacturers could tip Europe’s largest economy into a recession.

France’s INSEE statistics agency said output from extractive industries and the energy sector dipped 0.1% in July, compared with a 3.0% fall the previous month. French nuclear electricity generation — which accounts for 75 percent of domestic power output — rose 1.8% in August.

Transport sector production rose 0.6 percent, driven by stronger aircraft production. European planemaker Airbus is based in southwestern France.

Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted an average 0.5% increase, with forecasts ranging from -0.5% to 1.7%.

French industrial output fell 2.3 percent in June, INSEE said.f
