# 20 February 2023 15:26 (UTC +04:00)

Under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union (EU), from today EU launches a civilian mission in Armenia, APA reports citing the press service of the European Council.

It is noted that the total – exclusively civilian - staff of the EU mission in Armenia (EUMA) will be approximately 100, including around 50 unarmed observers.

EEAS Managing Director of the Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC) Stefano Tomat will serve as the Civilian Operation Commander, while Markus Ritter will serve as the Head of Mission.

Note that on January 23, 2023, European Council adopted a decision establishing EUMA.

The objective of the Mission is to contribute to stability in the border areas of Armenia, building confidence on the ground, and ensuring an environment conducive to normalisation efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan supported by the EU.
