Russian hackers compromised internet-connected cameras, including a small number along military routes in the Netherlands, Dutch intelligence agencies reported, NL Times reports.
The breaches allowed Russia to gather intelligence on military transport routes and defense equipment being delivered to Ukraine.
The findings come from a joint investigation by the General Intelligence and Security Service, or AIVD, and the Military Intelligence and Security Service, or MIVD. The agencies said the hackers targeted IP cameras, which can be accessed and viewed remotely over the internet. The systems included cameras used by businesses.
According to the agencies, the hacked cameras along military routes could give Russia insight into military transport movements. They could also reveal shipments of defense equipment bound for Ukraine.
The investigation found that IP cameras are often easy to hack. Many are poorly secured because they still use default passwords or outdated firmware. The AIVD and MIVD warned businesses located along military routes so they can strengthen their security.
The intelligence agencies have repeatedly warned that Russia is interested in military supply routes. They said the Netherlands is an important espionage target because of its role as a transit country and its support for Ukraine.
The agencies said Russia's use of hacked IP cameras is not limited to the Netherlands. They said the tactic is used systematically in other NATO and EU countries. Russia also uses the method to conduct espionage in Ukraine.
