A spokesman for Miramar Air Force Base (California) announced that an F-35 fifth-generation fighter jet crashed near the base and subsequently caught fire, APA reports citing Fox News.
Earlier, the local television station reported that the fighter jet had burned on the runway. Footage released showed the charred remains of the aircraft and thick plumes of smoke. A base spokesperson told Fox News that the incident was a "Class A accident involving a U.S. Marine Corps F-35B near Air Force Base Miramar." Class A incidents in the U.S. Air Force are defined as serious accidents resulting in property damage exceeding $2 million.
The pilot reportedly managed to eject. Information about his condition or the cause of the incident has not yet been released.
The average price of one F-35 may exceed $80 million.
