The process of the Caspian Sea’s shallowing may become irreversible and lead to a chain of serious consequences, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at the International Peace and Trust Forum held in Ashgabat, APA-Economics reports, citing TASS.
“As for the Caspian Sea, at the current rate, the ongoing shallowing could make this dangerous process irreversible, which would inevitably trigger a chain reaction of environmental, socio-economic, and even political consequences. Kazakhstan has put forward an initiative to develop a special interstate program aimed at preventing ecosystem degradation and the shallowing of the Caspian Sea,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
President Tokayev also called on the international community to support efforts to protect the Caspian Sea, adding: “Overall, in my view, water diplomacy requires close coordination among states. Existing international institutions usually operate in a fragmented manner, within narrow mandates, which does not correspond to the growing scale of water-related challenges.”
