Russia has always been a very reliable gas supplier for the Turkish market, and Ankara will continue to purchase gas from Russia, Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated this while speaking to journalists in Istanbul, APA-Economics reports, citing TASS.
“Türkiye began purchasing gas from Russia almost four decades ago, in the 1980s. Today, Russian gas is used across the entire territory of Türkiye. Throughout this period, Russia has been a very reliable supplier of gas to our market. In some years, its market share was very high — around 60%, and in some years 55%. Last year, this figure was about 40%. In recent years, it has dropped to around 23–22%,” the minister said.
According to him, Türkiye will continue to purchase gas from Russia and openly and transparently communicates this to the whole world, including colleagues in the United States.
“We need gas from Russia, we need gas from Iran, from Azerbaijan. In addition, Türkiye will also receive gas from many other sources, including LNG,” Alparslan Bayraktar said.
He added that BOTAŞ will continue purchasing gas from Gazprom. Türkiye will continue obtaining gas from Russia, but seeks to conclude short-term supply contracts.
