Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has expressed support for implementing a ban on the supply of Russian natural gas to the European Union, including through the “TurkStream” pipeline, said at the “Partnership on Transatlantic Energy Cooperation” conference held in Athens, APA-Economics reports, citing TASS.
He noted that “the United States considers Greece as a gateway to Europe’s energy needs” and called for the “swift implementation of the ban on Russian natural gas supplies.”
“Russian natural gas cannot reach Europe through the back door via Türkiye. We must be ready for the ‘Vertical Corridor’ that starts in Greece and ends in Ukraine,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that Greece is becoming a key gas supply point to replace Russian natural gas.
Gas enters Greece mainly through the Bulgarian gas system supplied via the “TurkStream” pipeline at the Sidirokastro entry point. Additionally, Greece receives natural gas from Azerbaijan through the Southern Gas Corridor and via liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments by sea.
