“Bulgaria’s main gas supply is formed by Azerbaijani gas,” said Teodora Georgieva, Executive Director and member of the Management Board of the Greece–Bulgaria Gas Interconnector (ICGB), APA-Economics reports.
She noted that Azerbaijani gas currently accounts for the largest share of Bulgaria’s gas balance and is being continuously transported to the country via the ICGB pipeline.
According to her, Azerbaijani gas transported through ICGB is not only the most competitive source in terms of price, but has also become a key pillar of Bulgaria’s energy security. It was noted that since the commissioning of the pipeline, no interruptions in gas supply have been recorded, which, especially against the backdrop of regional and global energy crises, has highlighted the role of Azerbaijani gas as a reliable source.
Teodora Georgieva emphasized that ICGB plays a strategic route within the framework of the Southern Gas Corridor and the “Vertical Gas Corridors” initiatives. In this context, the currently existing and planned second and third routes will, in the future, enable additional volumes of Azerbaijani gas to reach Southeast Europe and broader European markets.
The statement noted that one of the main partners of the project remains SOCAR, and that the long-term sustainability of ICGB is directly linked to the stable nature of Azerbaijani gas supplies. It was reported that the necessary procurement package for the expansion of the interconnector has been approved, which, in the long term, will further strengthen the position of Azerbaijani gas in the European market.
ICGB’s management assessed Azerbaijan as a strategic partner in the region’s energy security, noting that the operation of the interconnector plays an important role in diversifying Europe’s gas supply.
