The first gas production as part of the free gas development project in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field block is expected to begin in the first half of 2026, APA-Economics reports, citing BP’s report on the results of its activities in Azerbaijan for the first nine months of the current year.
According to the information, following the signing of a new addendum to the existing production sharing agreement (PSA) for ACG regarding free natural gas (FG), the initial production well was planned and safely drilled from the existing West Chirag platform. This well is also very important from an evaluation perspective, as the data obtained from it will help in preparing future plans for the development of FG reserves in ACG.
“In 2025, drilling operations in the well were successfully completed, and access has now been provided to two priority free gas (FG) layers located beneath the currently producing oil layers – the shallow Girmakustu Sand (GUK) and the deeper Girmakalti(GA) layer systems. As a result, the presence of gas reserves in the QÜQ layer system has been confirmed, and the first FG production from this layer in the ACG is expected to begin in the first half of 2026,” the report notes.
In addition, high-pressure gas reserves were also discovered in the GA layer system, and test operations in this layer are planned for early 2026.
It should be noted that to advance the exploration, evaluation, development, and production of free natural gas (FG) reserves in the ACG field, a new addendum to the existing production sharing agreement (PSA) for ACG was signed on September 20, 2024. The recoverable FG reserves in the ACG field are estimated to be quite substantial – up to 4 trillion cubic feet.
