Negotiations are underway on launching gas exports from the Absheron field to Türkiye starting in 2029, Prime Minister Ali Asadov said at the 12th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, APA reports.
Ali Asadov said that the mega energy projects jointly implemented by Azerbaijan and Türkiye are of great regional and global significance: “The implementation of such major projects as the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan and Baku–Tbilisi–Erzurum pipelines, as well as TANAP/TAP, not only connected two countries but also transformed the energy map of Eurasia. Today, oil and gas from Azerbaijan transported through the territory of Türkiye ensure the energy security of many countries. Considering the current geopolitical situation, increasing the transit volumes of energy pipelines is an urgent issue on the agenda. In this regard, the Southern Gas Corridor is of strategic importance. In recent months, the number of countries to which Azerbaijan exports gas has increased to 14, ten of which are European countries. Today, alongside Europe, we have also established ourselves as a reliable partner contributing to the energy security of the Middle East. Through our joint efforts, we began gas transportation to Syria in August. For the first time, Azerbaijani gas is being transported to the Middle East region via Türkiye. In March, the Presidents inaugurated the Iğdır–Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline. This project, which symbolizes our brotherhood, has strengthened Nakhchivan’s energy security.
Within the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement signed in 2024, SOCAR and BOTAŞ are successfully cooperating. This cooperation includes the purchase and sale of gas between the two companies, as well as swap operations for the supply of gas to Nakhchivan and for exports to third countries.
There are currently several promising projects on the agenda of our energy partnership. In June, Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO) acquired a 30 percent stake in the “Shafag–Asiman” offshore field located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. Together, we will work to unlock the full potential of this promising Caspian field.
In addition, negotiations are underway on starting gas exports from the Absheron field to Türkiye beginning in 2029.”
