International conference â€œDevelopment of authorities-civil society relationsâ€ starts in Baku

Baku. Elnur Mammadli â€“ APA. Two-day international conference â€œDevelopment of authorities-civil society relationsâ€ started in Baku on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, APA reports. The conference is supported by the Foreign Ministry of the Netherlands, External Affairs Department of Canada and International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, organized by Legal Awareness Society and World Movement for Democracy.
Chairman of Legal Awareness Society Intigam Aliyev said the government representatives had been invited to the conference, but they missed it. He said various issues on human rights would be discussed during the conference.

Representative of Malopolska education Union Alicia Derkowisky said the cooperation between the authorities and civil society was very important. Alicia Derkowisky said they were interested in the establishment of democratic society in Azerbaijan.

Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in Azerbaijan Veronika Kotek said constant dialogue between the civil society and authorities was one of the main attributes of democracy and underlined the necessity of the dialogue incide the civil society.

ChargÃ© d’affaires of the U.S. embassy Donald Lu said the state of human rights was not so bad in Azerbaijan.
â€œIt is important to hold such events. There are no large jails in Azerbaijan and NGOs are very active,â€ he said.

Ambassador of Norway to Azerbaijan Jon Ramberg said Norwegian government wants democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan and participates in making investments in the country.
â€œRecruitment in civil service is difficult in Azerbaijan. Change in this field would be a step serving transparency,â€ he said.

Plenary discussions on the legal basis of the civil society in Azerbaijan, state of human rights, the role of the national bodies in the development of human rights will be held during the conference.
