COP29 provides us with the opportunity to implement Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Simon Stiell, said at the Pre-COP29 conference held in Baku, APA reports.
He stated that if each country has the resources to address climate change, it is possible to achieve results: "At COP29, we must increase the obligations of each government. By the end of next year, national adaptation plans will be ready. The commitments related to climate change are fundamental. We all have obligations to keep the temperature at 1.5 degrees. We must ensure that all national commitments are maintained at 1.5 degrees. I call on all parties to assist and maintain communication. The outcomes of COPs come in the form of packages, and each issue is addressed there. We also have an additional package in this COP. We are working to turn commitments related to climate change into reality. We are ready to assist in the process."
Nabil Munir, the Chairman of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), expressed gratitude to the COP29 presidency for the preparations.
He noted that the Pre-COP provided an opportunity to revisit concerns over two days: "At COP29, I ask you to take more serious steps. We know already what science is saying. We witnessed the hottest year in history, glaciers are melting. Even as I speak here, glaciers are melting. We must translate science into action, adopt a bold political agenda, and build bridges. I propose that we do this."
