UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman interrupted the body's plenary session for several minutes due to an altercation between Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz, APA reports citing TASS.
During Waltz's speech at a meeting on a draft resolution to end the U.S. embargo on Cuba, Rodríguez Parrilla rose from his seat and approached the podium where the American permanent representative was standing, demanding the General Assembly President give him the floor due to Waltz's violation of the meeting's rules of procedure. "This man should step away from the podium. He will not threaten me in the United States, as he is trying to do. I am a representative of the United States; step away," Waltz said.
After this, the minister returned to the delegation's table and was given the floor. "I demand that the US representative be called to order, as he not only brazenly lies but also stoops below the dignity of this forum and its member countries. He insults the dignity of the people and government of Cuba. Mr. Waltz is lying again, and I wish him a more successful future in other positions," the Cuban Foreign Minister declared. Subsequently, Rodríguez Parrilla twice more raised points of order after the US permanent representative's speech, in which he accused the US representative of lying.
A vote on a draft resolution calling for the lifting of the US government's long-standing trade, economic, and financial embargo against Cuba will take place at the UN General Assembly session on October 28.
