During COP29, representatives of colonial territories held a protest in the Blue Zone against the widespread violation of local peoples' rights, APA reports.
The protest called for the elimination of the exploitation policies of colonial powers and the severe consequences they have caused, particularly the damage to the environment and the health of indigenous populations.
Representatives of local peoples condemned the gross human rights violations by colonial powers in overseas territories and the devastating effects of nuclear tests conducted in these colonies on the local populations. The protest was organized to raise the voices of overseas territory residents and bring their concerns to the international community. Protestors reflected their demands in slogans that called for solutions to the problems arising from the harmful activities of colonial powers in these territories. Slogans included "Stop human rights violations in overseas territories," "Compensate the affected populations," "Restore the environmental damage," "Hear the voices of local peoples," and "The effects of nuclear tests in overseas territories are killing people."
Protesters emphasized the need for serious examination of the modern-day impacts of colonialism and called for urgent action from the international community. They also highlighted the need for immediate measures against the continued exploitation and human rights violations even after the colonial era. Participants made calls for broader international solidarity against colonialism and stronger political and legal steps to ensure the rights of local peoples.
It is noteworthy that this is the first protest held in the Blue Zone of COP29 by an Azerbaijani organization.
