New-York hosts High-Level Forum on Climate Transparency at initiative of COP29 Presidency -PHOTO

On September 25, within the framework of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the "High-Level Forum on Climate Transparency" was held on the initiative of Azerbaijan as the COP29 chair in New York, APA reports

According to the report, the high-level officials from about 80 countries and international organizations participated in the event.

The main purpose of the forum was to support the process of preparing the Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR), which is the main component of the Extended Transparency Framework (ETF) created under the Paris Agreement and strengthen the cooperation between the partner countries and donor organizations and other interested parties in this direction.

The COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev touched upon the importance of climate transparency in his opening speech and informed the participants about the work done by the COP29 Presidency in this field and the upcoming action plans. He said that the BTRs, which will be presented for the first time this year, play an important role in the objective assessment of the work done in the field of climate change. In this regard, the importance of the training seminars organized by the COP29 Presidency with the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other partners in Baku and in different regions of the world on the preparation of BTRs was emphasized.

Within the framework of the event, the presentation of the "Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform" (BTP), which is considered the main legacy of COP29 on climate transparency and is aimed at building trust between the party countries and increasing the potential in the preparation of BTRs, was held.

In his speech, the Lead Negotiator for COP29 Azerbaijan Yalchin Rafiyev emphasized that BTP will be an important platform in the process of global climate transparency. He noted that the main goal of the BTP is to build trust and confidence among the party states, as well as to support developing countries in the preparation and finalization of BTRs, and to continue the transparency agenda after COP29 by promoting universal participation in the ETF.

During the event, also, the presidency's road map and upcoming action plans related to climate transparency and BTRs were presented by Zulfiyya Suleymanova, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, COP29 High-Level Couple Appointed on Climate Transparency and Special Representative for International Environmental Cooperation and Italy's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Francesco Corvaro.

During the panel discussions held within the event, ministers and deputy ministers from Japan, Egypt, Samoa, USA, Türkiye, Switzerland, Germany, France, Georgia, Hungary, lead climate negotiators, as well as high-level representatives of the UNFCCC, UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) spoke and expressed the importance of the contributions of the COP29 Presidency in the field of climate transparency, as well as their support for the Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform (BTP).
