Interview with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
- Azerbaijan has taken the initiative to address climate issues in Central Asia. What steps should be taken to resolve this problem?
- First and foremost, we are working on many initiatives with the COP29 Presidency. We have recently published our report together with them. We are working on an initiative for the leadership of Central Asia and Azerbaijan. Tomorrow, we will have an event on this topic. We will also start the investment forum that we will hold in Azerbaijan on the occasion of next year's Energy Week.
- Will climate investment targets be achieved at COP29, and will the necessary funds be raised?
- We work quite closely with the co-chairs, and we truly appreciate the trust and collaboration with them. This is very important. You know, we always need to clearly understand how COP functions. COP is the moment where we review the work we’ve exchanged and showcase the positive outcomes. I believe, as many have said, that COP29 will be the COP where the new 25 financial targets will be agreed upon. I hope this will be realized.
- What will be IRENA's contribution to COP29?
- As you know, we have already submitted our report. I believe this is the most important contribution to COP29. The presentation covers our activities, utilities, and decarbonization efforts. These are all elements of our cooperation with Azerbaijan. We are working well and are very satisfied with the process, and we hope to achieve a positive outcome.
- How do you evaluate Azerbaijan's activities in the field of renewable energy? Does this include IRENA's support for Azerbaijan?
- Initially, we are fully supporting Azerbaijan. Of course, we are also working with them on project financing. We have close cooperation with the Minister of Energy. We are working on all aspects related to the end of the transition. This includes planning, projects, as well as the scope of initiatives.
