Azerbaijan has put forward an initiative within the COP framework for the first time to assist small, developing island states that are members of the United Nations on climate issues, the Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Space Agency (Azercosmos) Samaddin Asadov told APA.
He noted that a part of this initiative involves Azercosmos providing support to these countries: “This concerns small island states in the Pacific and Caribbean regions. Azercosmos significantly supports organizations in these countries combating problems caused by climate change, using the data it collects. This support includes monitoring forested areas, agricultural lands, and coastlines, researching the best solutions for protection against potential tsunamis, as well as taking proactive measures to address issues such as droughts, floods, and flash floods. We know that the capacity for processing space-based data in these countries is extremely low. Therefore, Azercosmos will conduct various training programs to support our country’s initiative in this direction.”
