"COP29, considering the ongoing conflicts in the world, decided to raise the issue of peace and climate change," Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, said during the "High-level Panel on Climate and Peace: Enabling joint action to leave no one behind" held within the framework of COP29, APA reports.

The minister highlighted that climate change exacerbates issues related to food security, accelerates water scarcity, and causes land degradation, as well as human displacement.

He noted: "These events serve as catalysts for conflicts and periods of insecurity around the world that lead to deepening instability. On the contrary, the destructive impact of conflicts and their aftermath on infrastructure, land degradation, and biodiversity will further intensify the climate crisis, creating a period that harms peace, sustainability, and development."

The minister added that, by 2021, 355 million households, or approximately 1.3 billion people, were exposed to climate risks: "Of these, 40%—142 million households or more than 500 million people—are in conflict or conflict-prone areas. In response to the increasing voice of the most vulnerable groups, the COP29 Presidency has been leading international efforts in recent months to strengthen joint action on the link between climate and peace."
