"We are trying to use all opportunities to ensure sustainability, especially in the direction of preventing the spread of methane gas, due to climate change," COP29 Lead Negotiator and Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev said at a press conference of the COP29 Presidency, APA reports.
He said that certain results have been achieved in this direction at previous climate summits.
According to Y. Rafiyev, currently 160 countries, including Azerbaijan, have joined the initiative to prevent the spread of this harmful gas: "To meet this commitment, we must carefully revise all sources of methane emissions. Currently, 50 companies, including SOCAR, have joined the initiative to decarbonize oil and gas. I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that in 2022, food waste accounted for 110 percent of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. To date, more than 30 countries have already announced their accession to the declaration on limiting methane gas emissions. Among them are states that are among the top 10 countries in terms of the volume of emissions of this type of waste. This document identifies a wider range of measures that can be taken in this area this year."
