NATO Secretary General arrives in Tbilisi

Tbilisiâ€“APA. NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has arrived in Tbilisi to attend the first meeting of NATO-Georgia Commission set up to oversee Georgia’s membership bid. Scheffer leads a delegation of ambassadors from all 26 members of the alliance. NATO Secretary General will meet with the Georgian government and opposition, address the professors and students of Tbilisi University and visit Gori City. Interviewing with Rustavi-2 before the visit, Scheffer said during his visit to Georgia he would evaluate results of military confrontation between this country and Russia. â€œThis visit will be one of the decisive phases toward Georgiaâ€™s candidacy for NATO membershipâ€. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said NATO didnâ€™t show direct military assistance to Georgia, but the alliance could provide the country with material aid at the level of bilateral relations.
