Leaders of the separatist regimes Sergei Bagapsh and Eduard Kokoity addressed the sitting. The State Duma also called on the parliaments of UN member states to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. President of unrecognized Abkhazia Republic Sergei Bagapsh offered Russia to sign an agreement on military cooperation. Eduard Kokoity accused Georgia of arming with the help of Western states.

This morning Russian Federation Council called on President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Speaker of the upper house Sergei Mironov read the text of the appeal unanimously supported by the parliamentarians in today’s meeting. Mironov said that recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is an important step to ensure the security of these peoples.
“We should support both republics’ striving for stability, peace and independence. Both republics have all the attributes necessary for a state,” the text said.
