Two policemen wounded in Dagestan attack

Baku-APA. Two police officers were wounded by unidentified assailants early on Friday in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a local police source said, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

According to preliminary reports, the suspects opened fire with automatic weapons when the policemen stopped their car for an ID check.

â€œThe two police officers have been taken to a hospital with various injuries while the assailants have escaped,â€ the source said.

The search for attackers is underway.

More that a decade after the end of a federal war against separatists in another North Caucasus republic, Chechnya, militants continue to stage frequent attacks on security forces, police and civilians, in other regions in the region, including Dagestan.

Volatile Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya, saw around half of all militant attacks in Russia in the past two years.
