Eduard Kokoity agrees to step down

According to the agreement Eduard Kokoity will resign today, APA reports referring to RIA-Novosty. In turn, Dzhioeva will withdraw her supporters from the Tskhinvaliâ€™s central square, where they gathered in a protest against the falsification of the results of â€œpresidential electionsâ€ ten days ago.

Representative of the Russian Presidential Administration Sergei Vinokurov mediated the compromise agreement between the sides. Dzhioeva has not yet confirmed her participation in the â€œpresidential electionsâ€ scheduled to March 25, 2012.

Alla Dzhioeva defeated â€œminister of emergencyâ€ Anatoly Bibilov in the South Ossetian â€œpresidential electionsâ€ on November 27, but arguing falsification of the â€œelection resultsâ€ by Dzhioevaâ€™s supporters, the Supreme Court headed by Kokoityâ€™s cousin â€œannulled the result of the elections and scheduled the new â€œelectionsâ€ to March 25, 2012 without Dzhioevaâ€™s participationâ€. Dzhioeva refused to recognize the Supreme Courtâ€™s decision, declared herself â€œlegitimately elected presidentâ€ and took her supporters to the streets.

Kokoity couldnâ€™t run for the â€œpresidencyâ€ because he took this office for two terms. According to the legislation, he can stay in the office until the election of the new â€œpresidentâ€. But Dzhioeva and her supporters demanded Kokoity to resign immediately and to hand over the office to the â€œlegitimately elected presidentâ€.
