Eduard Kokoity agrees to step down
# 10 December 2011 08:28 (UTC +04:00)
According to the agreement Eduard Kokoity will resign today, APA reports referring to RIA-Novosty. In turn, Dzhioeva will withdraw her supporters from the Tskhinvali’s central square, where they gathered in a protest against the falsification of the results of “presidential elections” ten days ago.

Representative of the Russian Presidential Administration Sergei Vinokurov mediated the compromise agreement between the sides. Dzhioeva has not yet confirmed her participation in the “presidential elections” scheduled to March 25, 2012.

Alla Dzhioeva defeated “minister of emergency” Anatoly Bibilov in the South Ossetian “presidential elections” on November 27, but arguing falsification of the “election results” by Dzhioeva’s supporters, the Supreme Court headed by Kokoity’s cousin “annulled the result of the elections and scheduled the new “elections” to March 25, 2012 without Dzhioeva’s participation”. Dzhioeva refused to recognize the Supreme Court’s decision, declared herself “legitimately elected president” and took her supporters to the streets.

Kokoity couldn’t run for the “presidency” because he took this office for two terms. According to the legislation, he can stay in the office until the election of the new “president”. But Dzhioeva and her supporters demanded Kokoity to resign immediately and to hand over the office to the “legitimately elected president”.
