Police and security personnel have formed a "human wall" to prevent the protestors marching on the court building.
A Ukrainian court ordered the arrest Tymoshenko, now the main opposition leader, earlier Friday on contempt of court charges.
In the trial, the prosecution alleges Tymoshenko signed a gas supply deal with Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom in 2009, which caused damages to the Ukrainian economy.
